MKV vs MP4: Understanding the Difference
MKV (Matroska) is a flexible container format popular for HD video content. It supports multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and chapters. However, device support is limited compared to MP4.
MP4 is the de facto standard for digital video. While less flexible than MKV, it plays on virtually every device, from old smartphones to smart TVs and gaming consoles.
Converting MKV to MP4 trades some format flexibility for universal compatibility. If you only need the video content on multiple devices, MP4 is the practical choice.
Recommended Settings for MKV Conversion
For general use, keep resolution at "Original" with "Balanced" preset. This maintains your video's native quality while creating a universally playable file.
For large 1080p or 4K MKV files, consider reducing resolution to 720p if targeting mobile viewing. The smaller file size improves transfer speed and storage efficiency.
The "Fast" preset works well for content where compression artifacts are less noticeable, such as animation or content with limited motion.
Tips for MKV to MP4 Conversion
Before converting, verify the video plays correctly in your browser. This confirms the codecs are supported and the file is not corrupted.
For multi-gigabyte MKV files, close other browser tabs and applications to free up memory. Browser-based conversion uses RAM proportional to file size.
If you need subtitles, consider finding separate SRT files online for your content, as embedded MKV subtitles may not transfer to MP4.
MKV to MP4 FAQs
Why won't my phone play MKV files?
Most smartphones do not natively support MKV format. Converting to MP4 creates a universally compatible file that plays on all iOS and Android devices without additional apps.
Are subtitles preserved when converting MKV to MP4?
Embedded subtitle tracks may not be preserved in the conversion. For subtitles, we recommend extracting them as separate SRT files or using hardcoded (burned-in) subtitles.
Can I convert MKV files with multiple audio tracks?
The converter will include the primary audio track. Multiple audio tracks are not supported in the current version. Select your preferred audio language before conversion if your player allows it.
How large of an MKV file can I convert?
There is no artificial limit. Practical limits depend on your device's available RAM. Files up to 2-4GB typically work well on devices with 8GB+ RAM.
Is there quality loss converting MKV to MP4?
Some quality loss occurs during re-encoding. For minimal loss, use "Best Quality" preset. If your MKV already uses H.264 video codec, consider remuxing tools for lossless conversion (not supported here).
Why is MKV to MP4 conversion taking so long?
Video conversion is computationally intensive. Large files, high resolutions, and the "Best Quality" preset require more processing time. Progress is shown in real-time.
